Rat Infestation Shuts Down School Kitchen: FSAI Takes Action (2025)

Imagine this: children's school meals, meant to nourish young minds, are potentially being prepared in a kitchen where rodents roam free. That's the unsettling reality discovered in October, as the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) issued closure orders to eleven food businesses. Among them was a company, The Lunch Bag, responsible for providing hot meals to schoolchildren.

The offending site, located at Clontarf Educate Together National School in Dublin 5, was found to have a significant rat problem. Inspectors reported finding rat droppings and, even more concerning, confirmation from staff of a rat sighting in early October. The inspector's report stated that rodents "are likely to have had contact with food, food packaging and utensils for children’s meals" in the kitchen and adjacent areas.

But here's where it gets controversial... The Lunch Bag's closure order remains in effect at the time of this report.

Other businesses faced similar fates. The Crescent Stores in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, was shut down due to mouse droppings. A Camile Thai in Dolphin’s Barn was also targeted for rodent activity. Furthermore, Top 3 Chinese in Stillorgan was closed due to a kitchen surface "engrained with grease."

In another instance, Kimchi Hop House, a Dublin city restaurant, was ordered to close after an inspector discovered a dead rat under a dishwasher, along with rat droppings on the floor and windowsill near a countertop fridge storing open food. Fortunately, this restaurant's closure order was lifted on November 4th.

Top 3 Chinese, in Stillorgan, also faced scrutiny, with inspectors citing a "serious lack of basic cleaning and disinfection." One surface was described as "engrained with grease and old food debris," and inadequate procedures were in place to prevent cross-contamination between raw and ready-to-eat foods. This restaurant's closure order was lifted on the following Monday.

Greg Dempsey, the FSAI's chief executive, emphasized the importance of maintaining strong food safety and hygiene practices. He noted that issues like inadequate pest control, poor cleaning standards, and unsafe food storage are the primary causes for enforcement actions. He added that these are "entirely preventable non-compliances when proper food safety management systems are in place." With the Christmas season approaching, Dempsey urged food businesses to prepare robust food safety procedures to handle increased demands.
